Help us to help them

Ex-policemen bowling along nicely

By Fiona Miller

A GROUP of ex-policemen are planning a bowlathon to raise money for our appeal.
The five, who belong to the International Police Association, intend to play nine matches in nine different parts of Scotland in 48 hours.
Three are from Strathclyde Police — Tom Daly, Les Brown and Kerr Reid. They’ll be joined by Jim Fraser, who retires this month from Central Scotland Police and his former colleague Eddie Spears.

The bowlathon boys get in some practice
for their big event — from left, Kerr Reid,
Les Brown, Eddie Spears and Tom Daly.

They’ll have their work cut out when they start on May 29, because they’ll be playing five ends of bowls against four members from each of the nine other IPA branches. And in between they’ll cover hundreds of miles in a race against time.
On day one they’ll start at Inverness, then move on to Kittybrewster in Aberdeen, Carnoustie, Kirkcaldy and Grangemouth.
“Race night”
They’ll stay overnight in Edinburgh before going to Colinton in the city, then Gretna, followed by Dundonald in Ayrshire before ending up at Kingswood Bowling Club, King’s Park, Glasgow.
The boys will then take part in a “race night” to help raise even more funds.
Organiser Tom Daly said, “We couldn’t have done this without a great deal of help from sponsors. Stagecoach provided a coach and driver. Culduthel Lodge in Inverness and the Hilton Hotel at Edinburgh Airport helped with accommodation. We’re also grateful to Mailboxes, Kingswood Bowling Club, Parks of Hamilton, Menock Builders, Nationwide Building Society, GlaxoSmithKline, Glendinning Builders and the Alishan Tandoori among many others.
“The reason we chose The Sunday Post Appeal was because Les has raised money for CHAS in the past and I consider myself really lucky to have two healthy children. Others aren’t so fortunate.”
The bowling policemen are hoping to raise money along the way at the various bowling clubs.
