By Ione Campsie WHEN PUPILS at Bridge of Don Academy, Aberdeen, came to decide which charitable cause they should back, they didn’t take long to make up their minds. In fact, the penny dropped straight away — CHAS. And the reason was simple, they wanted to help children the same age as themselves.

Buckets known as “Copper Droppers” were placed around the school and soon were filling up with loose change. By the end of term, an incredible
£750 had been raised. But the charities committee, run by fifth and sixth year students, wasn’t finished there. They reckoned all those pennies could be shaped into something spectacular, so held a competition to see who could come up with the best design. The winner was S1 pupil Rebecca McAllister, who stuck to the theme by using the CHAS rocking horse logo with an added rider and floating balloons. With the help of their teachers, it took Rebecca and her classmates several hours to piece the coins together. And, as far as CHAS is concerned, every one is a lucky penny.
