Sir Steve says
it’s tee-time

LAST June £75,000 was raised for CHAS, when Sir Steve Redgrave became the 491st golfer to play the 18th on the Torrance Course at St Andrews Bay.
That set a world record for the most golfers to complete a round on a single course in one day. Now the five-time Olympic champion is set to do it all again. The Sir Steve Redgrave Charitable Trust, along with The Sunday Post, is backing a new record attempt on Saturday — and it’s all in aid of CHAS.
“Last year’s event went very well,” Sir Steve said. “It was a great moment when I made the last putt.”
For Sir Steve, the only winner was CHAS — which received an incredible £75,000 from sponsorship, merchandising and donations.
“After my Olympic days I wanted to get involved in charities to make an impact,” he explained. “Most people expect hospices to be depressing, but it’s not true. When I visited Rachel House it was alive and happening — the atmosphere for the children was fantastic.”
Sir Steve is determined to raise even more money this year, and is looking for our golfing readers to get on the green.
“You don’t have to be the best golfer,” he added, “as long as you can hit a ball and move quickly then come and play. There are no prizes, so it doesn’t matter if it takes 20 shots to reach the green — as long as it’s fast.”
Sir Steve and event organiser Paul Coffey are aiming to attract more than 500 golfers, to top their record from last year.
To join Paul and Sir Steve at the St Andrews Bay Golf Resort for the World Record Golf Attempt 2004, readers can register at event website www.worldrecordgolf.com
Teams can enter as a fourball at a cost of £200, or individuals can secure a place for a minimum donation or sponsorship of £50.
