Travelcare girls caused a buzz in the Borders

By Steven Bowron

THE Borders have been a-buzz with fund-raising activity for our CHAS Appeal, thanks to Travelcare consultants, Kelly Douglas and Janette McAffee.
After the travel agents chose the children’s hospice as their charity for the year, the women spent their summer organising a ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s-themed dance at Jedburgh Town Hall.
And their expertise in getting cracking deals for their clients certainly stood them in good stead.

Thanks to their fine efforts, many shops and businesses happily donated prizes for the night’s raffle, with goodies ranging from meal vouchers and bottles of port to a portable TV.
A bus company ferried revellers home to Hawick, Kelso and Melrose, and the Royal Hotel was particularly obliging in running the bar and paying for the hire of the venue. Borders band Rocking Horse and Magnum Disco provided free ntertainment for the 200 ticket-holders.
Kelly and Janette’s achievement was particularly impressive since at one point they thought they might lose their jobs because of branch closures.
After the success of their fund-raising evening in August, Kelly and Janette have had an autumn of collecting in all the donations and pledges.
Eventually they were able to hand a cheque for the grand sum of £1000.64 to CHAS Borders rep Irene Cooper.
