School so proud of
their silver crest

BAIRD MEMORIAL Primary School in North Carbrain, Cumbernauld, made their 25th anniversary celebrations a sparkling affair by collecting silver coins for our appeal.
The school council — representatives from each of the classes — unanimously agreed they wanted to contribute something to the new hospice.

Pupils Scott Miller and Shannon Kemp, holding Smarties tubes full of silver and the school's cheque for our appeal, flank Baird Memorial Head Teacher Moira Langridge while the rest of the pupils give themselves a cheer.

Head teacher Moira Langridge explained, “Our school council members suggested we collect silver to commemorate our 25th anniversary.
“So we asked the children to fill Smarties tubes with 5p and 20p coins and the money flooded in.”
The school decided they would display the money in the shape of their school logo.
Baird Memorial Primary’s crest consists of thistles to represent Scotland and a spade signifying the area’s farming community.
Mrs Langridge continued, “An artistic parent chalked the outline of our crest on the school hall floor and the pupils placed the money along the chalk lines. It took us all day to place the coins, collect them back in and count them back into the bank bags — but it was all worth it.”
And Baird Memorial’s 190 pupils proved to be real “smarties” when the final total came to £838.36.
The fund-raiser is just one of many events the school has organised since last September, with anniversary celebrations scheduled to carry on through to the summer holidays.
