Lakeballs tee you up

By Kathryn Mainds

THE WORLD Record Golf Event at St Andrews Bay on June 8 has been given a tremendous boost with Lakeball.com’s generous donation of 4000 golf balls.
650 golfers are taking part in the CHAS world record attempt to have more golfers on a single golf course in 24 hours than has ever been achieved before.

And each player will be presented with six balls as they tee off.
As the name suggests, Internet company Lakeballs.com obtain their golf balls in a most unusual way. Gary Kay, who launched the company two years ago, explains, “We have a team of full-time divers who dive into golf lakes in the UK, with the permission of the golf clubs, and we pay the course in golf balls or money for the privilege.
“It’s very big business in the US and seems to be taking off here.
“There are about four million golfers in the UK and if they lose around 10 balls each a year then that works out at about 40 million balls.
“We expect our divers will find in excess of a million this year.
“The quality of the balls we sell is good. They’re cleaned and graded and we throw away the poor quality ones. Balls cost anything up to £3.50, but we sell them from as little 12p, up to £2.”
Lakeballs.com sells golf balls all over the UK and in Europe, where the price of a golf ball can be quite high.
And Gary is delighted to be involved in the project, which is being backed by five-times Olympic gold-medallist, Sir Steve Redgrave.
Gary said, “We were approached by Paul Coffey, the event organiser, who told us he was looking for a company to sponsor the event with 4000 balls.
“We felt that we owed something back to Scotland as we’ve had a lot of support from Scots, with a large percentage of our orders being made by golfers in Scotland.”
