ended with boys
and girls at war!

THE BALL was well and truly in the court of Craig Helen Tennis Club in Helensburgh when it came to their fund-raising fun day — those involved served up a winner, raising £270 for our appeal.
The day came about after Tommy Watt decided to organise an event where children could get together to give money to an excellent cause, while having lots of laughs in the process.
Tommy, a member of the tennis club for more than 20 years, is humble about his efforts.
He said, “I’ve read and heard about all the great things people do for CHAS. And I wanted to do whatever I could to help, no matter how small.
“We organised a similar event last year for Comic Relief which was a great success and decided to do it all over again but this time for The Sunday Post CHAS Appeal.
“With the new hospice being built nearby it’s good to know the money is helping a charity on a local level.
“We had initially planned on 100 children turning up, but more than 120 supported us in the end. In fact we ran out of food so had to dash around searching for supplies.”
Those who came to support the event were members of the club or connected in some way to a member. No-one was to be excluded.
Having to pay a small charge on entrance to the club, the children, aged 5-15, soon got into the swing of things, certainly making a racket along the way.
With tennis-themed games all afternoon, the youngsters ran around in friendly competition with a surprise tug-of-war to bring the day to a close.
Tommy said, “We had a boys versus girls competition with about 60 youngsters on each side.
“The boys were defeated by the girls — much to the girls’ delight and the boys’ despair. So the boys are under strict instructions to build up their muscles for next year.”
