Church hall was packed to the rafters

By Paul Hastie

THE FENWICK Church Guild Committee has really come up trumps for our Hospice Appeal. They held a mammoth whist drive and raised a whopping £1244.
The guild put their annual spring tea event on hold this year and decided to host a CHAS fund-raiser instead.

The event was a knockout — more than 120 whist players from the Ayrshire community of Fenwick and beyond came along and squeezed into the church hall.
Guild president Margaret Donaldson said, “It was a great day and we had an amazing turn-out. The hall was filled to capacity — we couldn’t have fitted another table in if we’d tried.
“It all happened by word-of-mouth, through the church, the local bowling club and the Rurals.”
It wasn’t just the whist that pulled in the crowds. The Guild ran a raffle and provided a feast of sandwiches and home baking.
“We got some great prizes,” said Margaret. “Practically every person who came donated something. We had wine, whisky, baskets, chocolates — there was so much on offer, few people left without winning something.”
Margaret and the 22 Guild committee members have been following the progress of our appeal for the past year, and were pleased they could contribute themselves.
“We’re keen to help out CHAS — they do such good work. If we hadn’t picked such a worthy cause I don’t think as many people would have turned up.”
