£5000 cheque is a
real knockout

By Sarah Johnson

OUR READERS are knocking themselves out to support CHAS — especially staff at the Grangemouth ASDA depot.
In May last year, teams from all over Britain came to Falkirk to compete in Asda’s It’s a Knockout! style contest. The professionally-organised event was a smash hit.
On Thursday, some of the 500-strong workforce Grangemouth team handed over £5000 to The Sunday Post CHAS Appeal. It was the final instalment from a year’s effort which raised £15,794.59.
Colin Reid, Operations Manager at the depot, said, “We’re delighted to support CHAS because it’s such an important charity. It’s great to feel you’re making a difference. It’s so important to Scotland.”
Encourage people
Colin talked about how our publicity focusing on CHAS has made it easier to encourage people to support them on fund-raising exercises.
“They immediately know what you’re talking about and are happy to support it as they are aware of CHAS’s aims.”

mayhem from the Knockout event.

Having run over many years now, with Grangemouth participating for five years, the It’s a Knockout! contest is considered a perfect opportunity for ASDA staff to get together while being sponsored to raise money for charity.
The winners of each year’s battle hosts the following year’s event and choose the charity to benefit.
Having won the year previously, Grangemouth hosted the competition at Callander Park, Falkirk, and the 15 teams descended upon the town. Each team is encouraged to raise £1000 for the host team’s selected charity.
Most reached their target, with others coming close.
This time the Grangemouth team finished third, with Leeds-based Asda House the winners.
There were monstrously large monks and implausibly tottering penguins, plenty of water, bubbles and obstacles with fierce, but friendly, competition to amuse the participants and the other members of staff, family and friends who stood by in support.
Pippa Robeson, collecting the cheque on behalf of CHAS, spoke of the “lovely boost” that such tremendous support gives.
“They have all worked so hard and been so loyal to CHAS, it’s simply fantastic. This really is helping a national charity on a local level.”
Cathy Peattie, MSP for Falkirk East, has been working closely with ASDA and other local groups in the area and she is enthusiastic about the difference members of her constituency are making to good causes.
She said, “They worked so hard, I’m glad to help where I can. It’s good to see their loyalty recognised by CHAS and The Sunday Post.”
