£200,000 target for
Scots Rotarians

By Jackie Bytheway

Scotland’s 190 Rotary clubs have decided to come on board and raise money for The Sunday Post CHAS Appeal.
And they have set themselves the target of raising £200,000 by June 30 next year.
Three Rotarians — Ian Geddes, Ian Campbell and Iain Young — kick-started their fund-raising at Rachel House by cutting a cake with BBC weathergirl Gail Pirrie, as well as Stacey O’Donnell (10) from Edinburgh and Amna Ahmed (9) from Glasgow, both of whose brothers use Rachel House.
At the same time, the Rotarians handed The Sunday Post appeal a cheque for £1000 they raised through a charity golf tournament.

Cutting the cake to celebrate the rotary clubs’ fund-raising involvement with CHAS are Ian Geddes (Rotary district East), Stacey O’Donnell and Amna Ahmed (sisters of Rachel house residents) Gail Pirrie (BBC weathergirl), Iain Young (Rotary district North) and Ian Campbell (Rotary district South West).

Rotary in Scotland is split into three districts — North, South West and East. Ian Geddes, Rotary District Governor for Scotland East, said, “Sixteen Canadian Rotarians came over to play golf against 16 of their Scottish counterparts from each of the three districts.
“The captain of the Canadian team decided he would fine his team members during the tournament for ‘bad sportmanship’, including offences such as wearing the wrong shirt or tie! The team’s lapses ended up benefitting CHAS by £500.
Fined
“The captain of the Scottish team decided to fine his 48-strong team £10 each — just for taking part. They raised £480 and rounded it up to £500.”
The matches were played at eight courses the length and breadth of Scotland during May and June.
The Scottish Rotary clubs’ drive is part of a nationwide campaign.
Shona Cardle, CHAS fund-raising manager for West Scotland, said, “CHAS is a member of the Association of Children’s Hospices (ACH) and Rotary International in Britain and Northern Ireland chose ACH as their main charity for the year.
“The Rotary clubs in Scotland decided they would support CHAS because it’s the only Scottish hospice. That means all the money raised by the Rotarians will come direct to us.”
She added, “It’s brilliant they have decided to do this as it also raises our profile and awareness of the charity as it will be reaching a wider audience. Rotarians have such a wide network.”
High-profile
Ian Campbell, Rotary District Governor for Scotland South West, said, “A lot of our members support CHAS already. It has become a high-profile campaign in the west of Scotland. The Sunday Post is going great guns just now. It’s a very worthwhile project.
“I first came to see Rachel House when it opened and I was immediately impressed by the work they do. It’s a cause our members will find very easy to support. And with the second hospice being built at Balloch, it’s all the more relevant to the whole of Scotland.”
Weathergirl Gail was given a tour of Rachel House and said, “I’m really impressed. It’s such an amazing place and it has to be seen to be believed. It’s so happy and not at all what I imagined.
“Building a new hospice is such a worthwhile cause.”
