£27,200 raised by
Girl Power

By Sarah Johnson

THE Girls’ Brigade pledges to find true enrichment of life through self-control, reverence and a sense of responsibility.
Well, they went all-out to enrich the lives of many children in May by raising a staggering £27,200 for The Sunday Post CHAS Appeal.
Last year as Jean McInnes, Officer for the Govan based 10th Brigade, ran the Britannic Asset Management Women’s 10k in Glasgow she realised the event could be ideal for a future fund-raising exercise.

Taggart star Colin McCredie is presented with the cheque by Caroline Wallace, (centre left, holding cheque) and Lesley-Anne Kerr. 10th Brigade Officer Jean McInnes is second from the right, back row.

“I thought it would be the perfect opportunity for the girls to get together and work towards something that could benefit others,” says Jean.
“We chose CHAS as it seemed right that young people do something to help other children. As our youngest members are five, it’s a charity that is close to all our hearts.”
It was decided to set a target of £25,000. If each girl raised £100, the brigade would need 250 girls to run in this year’s 10k to reach their goal.
With 50 brigades in the Glasgow area getting together it took the Girls’ Brigade almost a year to get things just right for race day, May 18, as the girls trained hard and found friends and family to sponsor them.
And the target amount was achieved — and surpassed — as 252 girls crossed the finish line on the big day.
Overwhelming
Families and friends played an important part. “The support we received was
overwhelming,” says Jean. “Everyone was enthusiastic and helped where they could.”
As well as the girls, aged 15 to 18, raising sponsorship, a “Bring your dosh and nosh” night was held the night before the race.
This year’s race, the eleventh, was the biggest ever, with more than 10,000 entries. The route started and finished in Bellahouston Park on Glasgow’s South side.
Melanie Carruthers was the first of the Brigaders to finish, with the highly respectable time of 49 min 24 sec.
“We achieved far more than individuals could by pooling our resources and performing as a team,” says Jean. “It was such a good day, and we’re proud of the amount we’ve raised.”
Colin McCredie, DC Fraser in Taggart, collected the cheque on behalf of CHAS.
He enthused, “What an achievement! It’s a remarkable amount. This was Girl Power at it’s very best.”
