Penicuik Brownies cooked up a pretty penny

By Paul Hastie

THE 5th Penicuik Brownies certainly lived up to their Lend A Hand motto by raising £500 for our appeal.
Brown Owl Jan Read said, “Every year we always try to do a really big good turn, and decided this year it should be for CHAS after we read about The Sunday Post campaign.
“It started as just one event, but things really took off.”

The 5th Penicuik Brownies proudly show off
 their cheque for our appeal.

Fund-raising began last Christmas with a Nativity play and festive sale. The Brownies provided mulled wine and mince pies to encourage their parents to cough up nearly £150.
Brownies of all ages have been keen to step in and one Brownie’s granny, a former Guider, made and sold a word quiz to bring the total to £300. She even kept the Brownie promise to do a good turn every day — taking the quiz on her holiday cruise up the Rhine to sell to other passengers.
The 24-strong pack’s most spectacular effort was producing a Brownie recipe book. Each Brownie contributed their own favourite recipe — giving a variety of dishes from chocolate button cake to kaffir lime mussels with lemon grass.
The Brownies even tapped into their artistic side to design an eye-catching rainbow cover for the book.
