Harry Potter book brings in a magic £2500

By Gary Moug

BIDS FLOODED in from all over the country for the first edition hardback copy of Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, signed and donated by the author JK Rowling and put up for auction by The Sunday Post.
We’ve been snowed under with generous offers, but Glasgow priest Father John Lyons triumphed with a staggering bid of £2500. On Friday, we delivered the precious book to Solidarity, the charity shop he runs in Dumbarton Road.

The volunteer workers at the Solidarity charity shop with the book and their £2500 cheque (from left) Ruby, Raymond, Cecilia, Jim and Margaret.

On hand to take delivery was shop manageress Cecilia MacIntosh. She said, “The CHAS appeal is something that has really caught our imagination. As soon as we read about it we were determined to do something to help.
“Anything that involves helping children is always worthwhile.
“Here at the shop we have a team of unpaid volunteers who go round people’s houses collecting any items of clothing, toys, etc, they’re not going to use again. We then sell them on in the shop and donate the proceeds to people who really need it — like the homeless or sick children.
“Father Lyons was planning on donating this figure to CHAS anyway, so when he noticed the auction for the Harry Potter book he just decided to go for it.
“It actually works out perfectly, because this way the book will keep on raising money for good causes, as I believe he’s planning on donating it to another charity for them to use as a fund-raiser.”
