Help us to help them

On yer bike!

By Murray Scougall

IT’S not often pupils have the chance to tell their headmaster to get on his bike — but that’s exactly the case at Buckhaven Academy next week.
School rector John Lusby is dusting down his cycling gear and oiling his bike in preparation for a 100-mile sponsored cycle that has been carefully planned by some of his pupils.
John, a keen cyclist, is slightly worried about the course they’ve devised for him. He says, “I asked them to avoid the big hills but I don’t know if they’ve listened to my advice!”
His racing bike is so old it’s no longer in production and he can’t even recall the make and model. But he’s spent many hours lovingly restoring it to its former glory and is confident it will carry him through the gruelling test.
John is aiming to complete a loop beginning and ending at Rachel House, Kinross, on October 23, his 51st birthday.
He’ll be hoping it’s a trouble-free trip as he aims to make at least £1250 in sponsorship from pupils for our appeal.
Of course, many schools have already raised thousands of pounds for our Hospice Appeal, including a growing number of those attending primary schools.
Last week we received a cheque for £131.38 from St Andrews Primary in Rothesay on the Isle of Bute.
The children, staff and parents got together for a jumble sale of toys and books and very generously sent the proceeds to CHAS.
