They had a real
hunger for success

The fast is broken — and 60 seconds after this picture was taken,
there wasn’t any food left!

PUPILS AT Liberton High School in Edinburgh may spend most of their time being told what to do by teachers, but when it comes to fund-raising perhaps it’s they who should be giving lessons.
Over the last year they have drummed up a fantastic £1600 for our campaign.
And it’s all down to the novel ideas and hard graft of the school’s charity committee, headed by sixth-year pupil Nikki Summers.
Events held throughout the year included a talent show, a Christmas fayre, Euro quiz and a 24-hour fast.
“At the start of the year we all voted to support The Sunday Post’s CHAS Appeal,” explains Nikki (16).
“We have a charity group which meets every Monday lunchtime and we just put our heads together and came up with ways of raising money.
“The talent show was probably the most fun. About 20 people took part including two teachers, one played guitar and the other did a comic act which was a really good laugh. It’s not often a teacher is so willing to make a fool of himself!”
Coping with a teacher’s bad jokes may have been tough, but for some the 24-hour fast proved even more of a challenge.
When most pupils were dashing out the door at the end of the day, one group bedded down for the night in the school’s music room.
“We started at 12.30 pm on the Thursday and finished at 12.30 pm on Friday,” said Nikki.
“Everyone slept in sleeping bags on the floor — that way nobody could go home and cheat.
“It was funny seeing everyone in their pyjamas, but as well as being starving we ended up really tired because we didn’t get much sleep.
“The whole year was hard work, but there were a lot of laughs along the way.
“It’s good to know our money’s going to such a good cause.”
Their achievement was recognised with the handing-over of a cheque to delighted CHAS worker Pippa Robeson.
Pippa said, “I first came here a year ago to talk to the school about what we do at Rachel House and since then I have been amazed at the effort they’ve put in.
“They’ve just come up with more and more schemes.
“I’ve been to a lot of places to speak about CHAS, but I’ve rarely seen anything as well-organised and professional as this.
“The Liberton committee has done a fantastic job.” |
