Word’s
that almost broke Santa’s heart
She asked in a whisper if I was the real Santa, because she wanted to tell me I’d better give any bigger presents for her to children who had more time to appreciate them. She was completely unconcerned with herself. It brought a tear to my eye.
“Even on Wednesday, at this year’s Open Day, one girl said all she wanted for Christmas was for her younger sister to get a Winnie the Pooh bear, because that would make her happy.
“Another moving moment came while I was taking a break and watching some of the children around the tree with their presents. I overheard a carer ask a parent if they thought their child would be able to hang on to life until Christmas.”
The generous staff at RAF Leuchars raise a huge amount for charity. Apart from all the other good work they do throughout the year, Alan says a main aim of the Open Day is to make every child feel special and have fun.
“If anything we do makes them feel a little bit better, then it is all worthwhile. All these kids want from me is a hug and some reassurance, really, as they are just so innocent and untainted that they are looking for nothing other than love.
“It makes you realise how lucky you are when you hear the struggles they go through on a daily basis just to live.
“RAF Leuchars is keen to get involved in The Sunday Post Hospice Appeal to make a real difference to sick kids’ lives by building another hospice.
“So Santa will be staying in his grotto all this week, at the Hive, just outside the main RAF Leuchars base, Monday to Friday, 10 am to 1 pm, as well as Tuesday from 4 to 7 pm, for the public. Cost is £2 per child and we will be raising funds for the appeal.” |
