Haven
of peace
THE PEACE ROOM in Rachel House is a non-denominational chapel. Light floods in and, as the name suggests, there’s an amazing feeling of tranquillity in the room, writes Margaret Clayton.
Stressed-out parents can take a break here, knowing their child is nearby, enjoying the best of care from the Rachel House staff.
There are comfy seats and a pile of books and magazines. Bright paintings and posters decorate the walls.
But the most spectacular feature is the stained glass window. It was made by six women from the Wester Hailes housing scheme in Edinburgh who had no previous experience of art or glasswork.
Project co-ordinator Jan Moran helped them raise £2500 in funding from Edinburgh Council.
“The women showed amazing talent,” says Jan. “It was a work of great love which they wanted to give to the children and families at Rachel House.”
It took 18 months to complete the window which is called The Secret Garden.
It’s a spectacular work of vivid ruby, blue and green glass and is meant to symbolise a magical place which every child can visit in their imagination.
