Join The Sunday Post on our
pink ribbon
journey

By Sarah Johnson
WE’RE delighted to announce our media partnership with the Scottish Breast Cancer Care Pink
Ribbonwalk.
Together Breast Cancer Care and The Sunday Post hope to raise £200,000 at this year’s event at Scone Palace, Perthshire, on May 15.
And we know, with your help, we can achieve it.
The Pink Ribbonwalk is a sponsored 10 or 20-mile ramble that starts and finishes in the grounds of Scone Palace.
The challenging, but achievable, walk will take you through some of the country’s most beautiful countryside.
The Pink Ribbonwalk was launched five years ago at Blenheim Palace in the Cotswolds and, due to its popularity, has grown to four events taking place across the UK.
The Scone Palace walk was launched last year with nearly 500 people taking part.
Since 2005 11,000 supporters have raised £4.5 million and this year the charity is anticipating 3500 people will get involved in the UK.
We’re hoping to attract 750 of you to the beautiful setting of Scone Palace.
Diagnosed
And here’s why — each year nearly 46,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer. Five thousand of those are in Scotland, making it the most common cancer affecting women.
Women have a one in nine lifetime risk of developing the disease and 300 men a year are also diagnosed.
Every 11 minutes someone in the UK is told the devastating news they have breast cancer and, sadly, most of us know someone who’s been affected.
Dealing with a diagnosis is a confusing, lonely and anxious time, not only for the person at the very heart of that diagnosis, but also their family and friends.
That’s where Breast Cancer Care comes in.
The charity provides help and support for anyone affected by breast cancer — bringing people together though a vast range of services and events offering information and support.
More than 22,000 people are supported every year by the charity, which receives no government funding and so relies wholly on fund-raising and donations to keep these invaluable services going.
Murray Lindo, Director of Fund-raising at Breast Cancer Care said, “We’re hugely excited that The Sunday Post has come on board as the media partner for the Scone Palace & Perthshire Pink Ribbonwalk.
Awareness
“Sadly, the number of people diagnosed with breast cancer is on the increase so this partnership will be invaluable in increasing awareness of the scale and impact of breast cancer — and helping to raise vital funds for our support services.
“The Scone Palace Pink Ribbonwalk is a truly inspiring event and the perfect day out for anyone who is up for a fun challenge.
“There’s an amazing atmosphere from start to finish and by fund-raising for Breast Cancer Care you’ll be helping us provide practical and emotional support.
“When people are diagnosed they can feel lonely and overwhelmed. Breast Cancer Care wants to be there for them every step of the way.”
Over the next few months we’ll introduce you to just some of those who have benefited from the charity’s support and the volunteers who always go the extra mile to help.
All we’re asking is for you to walk just 10 (maybe 20) miles to ensure this work continues.
And just to prove The Sunday Post isn’t all talk, we’ll be introducing our own team in March, so if you aren’t able to take part in person, you can sponsor us.
We’re very excited about this and hope you’ll join us on the journey.
The Pink Ribbonwalk is open to women and men of all abilities. It doesn’t matter if you’re not an experienced walker, as long as you put in some training beforehand.
Each participant is asked to raise a minimum of £175 in sponsorship money and a non-refundable £30 entry fee. You can enter either as an individual or part of a team.
In return you’ll be given exclusive access to Scone Palace, private land and restricted areas, refreshments (including a well deserved celebratory BBQ), a Breast Cancer Care t-shirt plus monthly newsletters — not to mention the all-important certificate and medal at the finish line! And there are a few more treats thrown in en route.
Training tips
Training tips are included in your support pack, which you’ll receive when you sign up.
Breast Cancer Care will support you every step of the way and on the day ‘Cheering Stations’ will be positioned at various points along the route for friends and family who wish to offer support.
The minimum age for entrants is 16, and an adult must accompany those under 18. At least one adult must be present for every two under-age participants.
Entry is on a first come first served basis and registration will close once the event limit is reached, for health and safety reasons, so we’d strongly encourage you to sign up as soon as possible.
